  • The bark is generally light gray to gray-brown, rough, deeply grooved, and becomes darker and scaly as the tree matures.
  • Small deciduous tree, 40-120 feet tall, 30-60 feet wide, slow growing;
  • Upright habit, with a broad round crown.
  • The wood is used for flooring, furniture, and the only commercial tree grown for syrup production.
