What is a Birth Certificate Apostille?

A birth certificate is a government-issued Vital Record and generally does not require signing by a standard notary public. Whether it can be directly Apostilled depends primarily on the issuing authority, the name of the signatory, and their title at the bottom of the certificate.
Check who issued the birth certificate first
There are different versions of California birth certificates, and not all follow the exact same authentication path. We will first check the signature and title at the bottom of the document.
If the birth certificate bears the signature of a County Clerk or Deputy County Clerk, it can usually proceed directly to the California Apostille process.
A certified copy issued by a County Recorder, Deputy County Recorder, or the California State Registrar can generally be Apostilled directly.
