The stem is upright, with a particularly swollen base that resembles a wine bottle. The bark is gray-brown or white and cracked, like a tortoise shell, and the underground roots are fleshy.
Generally, plants over ten years old will bloom, and the flowers are white.
Medium evergreen tree, 30 feet tall and 6 feet wide outdoors; 6 feet tall indoors, slow growing.
Easy to maintain, drought-tolerant, light-loving, but can withstand low light.
