  • The stem segments (branches) are thick, fleshy, dark yellow-green, narrow oval segments with 3 to 6 densely arranged clusters of spines.
  • The flower tube is broadly cylindrical and the flowers are bright yellow to orange, opening in the early morning hours. They appear on 1- to 2-year-old stem segments.
  • The fruit is oval, red, up to 3 inches (7.5 cm) long, and contains light brown seeds and edible flesh.
  • A shrubby or treelike cactus that grows slowly to 16.5 feet (5 m) tall and usually has a cylindrical trunk. The root system spreads horizontally.
