Foliage turns attractive shades of reddish-purple to scarlet in fall.Flowers: The true flowers are small and greenish-yellow, clustered in a central button, surrounded by four large, pointed, creamy-white bracts that appear in late spring, after the leaves have emerged.Fruit: Produces a showy, round, pinkish-red to red, raspberry-like fruit that is edible and attractive to birds.Habit: A deciduous small tree or large shrub with a distinctive, horizontal, layered branching pattern and a vase-shaped to rounded crown. The bark exfoliates with age, creating a mottled pattern of tan, gray, and brown.
